Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

This comprehensive review provides a foundation to prepare you to assess, identify treatments for and prevent further complications in acute and critically ill patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). We review mild-to-moderate complications such as acute pain crisis which are treated in an acute care unit, as well as more severe complications related to emboli that often require intensive care. Barriers to access to care and the importance of nursing advocacy are discussed.

  • Review pathophysiology, assessment and pharmacotherapy pertinent to sickle cell disease.
  • Research evidence-based guidelines, including health maintenance and managing acute and chronic complications.
  • Identify the healthcare disparities those living with SCD may experience.
